A/N This AU is a subject close to my heart. Having researched the history of it for English lessons at school, I decided to give it the Jack and Ianto treatment. I hope I do it justice and that you all enjoy it.

A/N2 Apologies for any of you who are getting this multiple times, it's cross posted.

A/N3  This is for zazajb for the wonderful time I had whilst visiting her.  Thanks bb for making me laugh and being a fantastic friend.

The following morning when Ianto woke he remembered the revelation to Martha about his relationship with Jack, hoping that now she’d had time to think about it she hadn’t changed her mind and contacted the authorities.

He stretched and smiled, he was going to be waking up tomorrow in a different bed, with someone that he….he what?  Loved?  No that couldn’t be right he’d not known Jack that long, how could he have those feelings.  He shook his head and got out of bed.  He could smell cooking and remembered Martha saying she was making him breakfast.

As he dressed he thought he heard voices drifting up the stairs.  He knew there’d only been himself and Martha in the house last night, the other lodgers had been away for a few days.  He took a deep breath hoping that it wasn’t the authorities.

He quickly made his way down to the kitchen and stopped, listening to the talking.

“Ianto I know you’re out there and if you don’t want your breakfast getting cold you’d better come and eat it.” Shouted Martha.

He opened the door “how did you know I was there?”

“Oh, there’s a squeaky floorboard just at the bottom of the stairs and you trod on it.”

He looked into the kitchen but only saw Martha, was he imagining things, had he dreamt he’d heard voices?  He pushed the door further open and went into the kitchen.  As he was about to close the door he was grabbed from behind.  Arms snaking around his waist, a familiar scent invaded his nostrils.  It was Jack.  He relaxed and melted into the embrace.

Jack kissed his neck “morning gorgeous.  Wanted to surprise you, I missed you last night.”

“Mmm morning Jack, I missed you too.”

“Oi, boys, do you mind, I’ve not eaten yet.”  Martha laughed.

“Gee thanks Martha, how about I kiss you instead?”

“Don’t want your boyfriend to be jealous do we?”  she smiled.

“Oh that’s ok Martha, once Jack’s kissed you it’s my turn as a thank you for this breakfast.”

“Wow boys, this is the first time I’ve had two gorgeous men fighting over me.”  They all laughed.

They sat at the table, Ianto breathing a sigh of relief.

“You ok Yan?”

“Yeah Jack, I am now.”

“Yeah, when I came downstairs I thought, well I heard voices, didn’t know it was you and was worried that we’d been found out.”

“Oh my gorgeous Yan.  That’s not going to happen.”  Jack leant across and kissed him.

Martha watched them, thinking how good they looked together.  They finished their breakfast in a relaxed manner, chatter interspersing their eating.

Jack looked at his watch “Ianto we had better go.  We’ve got a lot to get done.  Rumour has it that they want the ship ready to trial on the first of April, that gives us a couple of weeks to get everything complete.  We get the lifeboats tested on 25th March, so we need to make sure everything is in place.”

“Ok Jack, I’ll just get my coat, then I’m all yours.”  Ianto grinned and left the room.

“Oh I know you’re mine, and I will show you tonight how much.”  Jack remembered Martha was in the room.  “Sorry Martha, I didn’t mean to embarrass you.”

“Hey don’t worry Jack, I can see how much you love the man.”

“But I….I don’t.”

“Jack you can’t fool me.  The way you look at him, the way you touch him.  It’s clear to me that you are in love with him.  Don’t you dare tell me it’s too soon.  I don’t want to hear that.  I’ve known you too long and can see when you’re happy, sad and yes….in love.  Have you said anything to him yet?”

“No….no I haven’t, I don’t want to scare him away.  I don’t want to lose him.”

“And you think saying I love you is going to scare him away?”

“Yeah I do, he’s beautiful, caring and only ever had girlfriends.  This is all new to him and….”

“And if you don’t say anything you think it’ll be alright?”  Jack nodded “No Jack, you’ve got to tell him, because if you hadn’t noticed, that beautiful young man is in love with you.”  She put her hand on his shoulder.

“How….how do you know that?”

“Oh Jack, it’s written all over his face.  Believe me Jack, he loves you.  So don’t waste time, tell him how you feel.  Show him, I don’t want to see him here tonight.  Take him home to your house and show him how much you love him.”  She stopped talking then as she heard Ianto step onto the loose floorboard.  Giving Jack’s shoulder another squeeze she leant in and kissed his cheek just as Ianto came through the door.

“Erm, if you don’t mind Miss Jones, that’s my boyfriend you’re kissing.”  Ianto laughed.

“Oh I know Ianto, but you can’t blame a girl for trying to kiss a gorgeous man, can you?”

They all laughed as Ianto pulled Jack in for a kiss.  “You ready Jack?”

“Yeah, thanks again for breakfast Martha.”

“Yeah thanks.”

“My pleasure boys.  And Jack….”

“Remember what I said?”  She smiled.

“I will….and thank you.”  He leant in and kissed her cheek.  They left her at the door waving.

“What was that about Jack?  What was Martha talking about?”

“Oh something I promised to do for her later.  Nothing for you to worry about.”

“Oh ok, if it’s anything I can help with let me know.”

“I will.”  He looked at the gorgeous man at his side wanting so much to hold his hand, wind his arm around his waist.  But for now they’d have to wait until they got home.

“Mmm, what Cariad?”  Ianto had been thinking about spending the night at Jack’s and didn’t realise what he’d said until it came out of his mouth.  “Erm sorry Jack….what did you say?”

“All I was going to say is, do you still want to come to my house after work tonight, but now I want to know what that meant.  What you just called me.”

They were at the shipyard so Ianto didn’t really want to explain.  “Erm, firstly yeah I’d like to be with you tonight and if you don’t mind, I’ll explain then.  I really don’t want anyone else to hear.”

“Oh, ok, I’ll be thinking all day now.”

“Well don’t worry it’s nothing bad and besides you’ll have too much work to do to be thinking about me.”

“No Ianto, I don’t stop thinking about you.  Can’t stop thinking how much I want you.”

“Be careful Jack, you never know who’s listening.  Let’s wait till we get home. It’s going to be difficult enough not being able to kiss you or touch you all day.”

“I know what you mean sweetheart.”  Jack hesitated “but I can wait if you can?”

“Yeah, it’ll make it all the better later.  Now I’ve got work to do.  If not my foreman won’t be too happy.”

“Yeah, I’ve heard he’s a bit of a tyrant.”

“Mmm yeah, I’ve heard that too.  But I think I may be able to tame him.”  Ianto looked into Jack’s eyes losing himself in the blue grey depths.  What was the sweetheart for Jack?

“Oi Ianto, you coming to do any work today?  Or is the Captain making you go elsewhere?”

“Coming Owen.  I’ll see you later Jack.”  They looked at one another, unspoken feelings radiating from them.

Jack watched Ianto go with Owen, wishing he could hold him one last time.  But that would have to wait till later.  He decided in that minute, Martha was right, he had to tell this gorgeous Welshman that he loved him.

Ianto was thankful that he was working in the main ballroom again that day.  He had really missed Jack the previous night, more than he thought he would.  He was glad of the distraction listening to Owen go on about this new girl he’d met.  Owen didn’t understand that Cardiff was a big place and that Ianto wouldn’t know his girlfriend.

“She’s funny, gorgeous, makes me laugh, gorgeous….”

“Enough Owen!  You’ve already said that.  The only thing you haven’t told me, is her name.”

“Haven’t I?”

“Nope, you haven’t.  So, come on then does she have a name?”

“Yeah, it’s Gwen, Gwen Cooper.”

Ianto stopped what he was doing and looked at Owen.  Of all the people for him to meet from Cardiff it had to be her.  She was Lisa’s best friend and she must have known where Ianto was.  Had Lisa asked her to come across and spy on Ianto?  Owen had said she was only here for a short while.  What was he going to do?  He was pleased that he was going with Jack on the Titanic.  Maybe he could avoid her.  He could tell Jack about her, maybe make excuses not to go out with everyone.  If he did that, then it wouldn’t make it difficult for them to keep their hands off one another.

“Ianto!  Hey, Ianto, you ok?  You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”

What could he tell Owen, he couldn’t say he thought Lisa had asked her to spy on him.  That sounded ridiculous.  “What?  Oh sorry Doc, I was just thinking about something.”

“Steady, you don’t want to hurt yourself!”  Owen laughed as Ianto glared at him.  “Sorry, but you know me.  Look is it anything I can help you with?”

Quick Ianto think.  “No, no, it’s ok, something I forgot to do when I moved in to Martha’s last night.”

“Oh yeah, what?”

“I erm….I was meant to pay her a week’s rent, but forgot.”

“Don’t panic, she knows you’ll pay it.  Come on let’s go get some lunch.  That was the claxon.”

“Oh, ok, erm, I need to speak to Jack, will you excuse me.  I’ll be back in a minute and I’ll bring you a mug of tea.”

“That’d be good, thanks.”

Ianto raced off to find Jack, he had to tell him what he’d just found out.  He found him talking to a guy in a suit.  As he got closer he realised it was Bruce Ismay.  He didn’t want to intrude in case it was something important.

Just as he was about to leave Jack saw him.  “Ianto, hi, I was just telling Mr Ismay that you were pleased to be sailing on the maiden voyage and that you didn’t mind working on the passage.”

Ianto edged closer, he could feel himself begin to blush and didn’t want Mr Ismay to notice.  He went and stood as close as he dared to Jack wanting so much to hold him and knowing that Jack probably felt the same.

He held his hand out “good afternoon Mr Ismay.  Thank you for allowing me to travel on board.  It’ll give me a chance to see my family.”

“No, thank you Mr Jones, I’m pleased you and Jack are going, I know then if anything happens, goes wrong, I’ll have two of my best men on board to help fix things.”  He smiled at both Jack and Ianto.  “You’ll have to excuse me gentlemen, I have a meeting with the Port Authority regarding her trial on 1st April.”  He shook both their hands and disappeared.

Ianto’s face, Jack noticed, looked scared.  “Hey Yan, what’s wrong, you look worried.”

“Oh Jack, something’s happened and I don’t know what to do about it.”

“Hey it can’t be that bad can it?”

“Oh believe me Jack, it’s bad.  But I can’t really talk now, can we talk tonight….please?”

“Of course, you are still coming around tonight aren’t you?”

“Yeah I am and can’t wait, but would it make any difference if I came straight from work?  I really need to talk to you as soon as possible.  Then I’ll need you to hold me.”  He tried to smile but it didn’t quite reach the crystal blue eyes.

“You don’t have to ask that, you know I want you at mine all the time.  Stop worrying, whatever it is we’ll sort it out.”

“Thank you Jack.  I must get back to Owen, I promised him a mug of tea.  I’ll see you at the end of the day.  And Jack….”

“Thank you.”

“I’ve not done anything….yet.”

“Oh but you have, you’re there for me.”

“Always sweetheart, always.”

Ianto reached out a hand wanting so much to stroke Jack’s cheek, wanting to feel this man under his touch, but he pulled his hand back not knowing who may be looking.  “I’ll see you later Cariad.”  And he was gone.

Jack watched him go, something had happened since they’d arrived at work, and it was something that was scaring his lover.

For the remainder of the day Jack couldn’t stop thinking that Ianto had changed his mind, that he didn’t want to be with him.  Jack couldn’t wait for the end of the day.

Ianto made his way back to Owen taking mugs of tea with him as promised.  He couldn’t tell Jack, not with Ismay there.  He’d have to wait, he was scared.  More so than when he realised he had feelings for Jack.  He wished it was the end of the day.

“Hey Ianto!  Over here.”  Owen shouted as he saw Ianto approaching.  “The guys and I have been discussing going out for a drink tomorrow night and we’ve thought about asking our wives and girlfriends to come with us.  Now I know you haven’t got anyone, and neither has Jack, but I’m sure my cousin Suzie has a friend she could bring along for you.  Suzie likes Jack and….well I’m sure….”

“No, sorry Owen I can’t.  I’ve got some stuff to sort out, I’m going….”  He couldn’t say where, he didn’t want Lisa finding out.  “I’m going to be moving on again once this project’s completed.  So I need to make sure I’ve got something to go to.”  He knew he was rambling but he had to convince Owen he was busy.

“You’ve got plenty of time to sort that out.  Go on, I’ll talk to Jack we could do with a night out.  And anyway I want you to meet Gwen, seeing as though she’s from your home town.  You may know her.”

“Don’t think so Owen, Cardiff is really a big place.”

The claxon sounded for the end of lunch.  Ianto was pleased they had to get back to work, he didn’t want to have this conversation.  He wanted the end of the day to come quickly so he could speak to Jack.

The afternoon seemed to drag on, and Ianto found himself looking at his watch wishing for 5.30pm to come around.  When finally the claxon sounded for the end of the day, Ianto was the first away.  He went looking for Jack.

Virtually running into the workshop, he literally ran into Jack.  “Oh….erm….I’m sorry Jack.  I didn’t….”

“Slow down Ianto, what’s the emergency?”

“I need to get away from here, can you meet me at Martha’s.”

“I’ve a better idea.  Here take my key, go to my house, get yourself a drink there’s some whiskey in the sideboard, calm down and I’ll be there as soon as I’ve checked the men are ok.”

“Are you sure?”

“Positive.  Whatever has bothered you has got to have a solution and we’ll sort it out together.  I don’t like seeing you like this.  Here, take it.”  He handed Ianto a key.  “Let yourself in and try not to worry.  I’ll be there in about twenty minutes.”

“Ok, thank you.  Don’t be long Jack, please.”  He held onto Jack’s hand when he took the key, just that fraction longer than he should, as he heard Owen behind them he quickly pulled his hand away.

“Hey Ianto what was the rush?  Jack, what’s happening?”

They both looked at Owen, Jack spoke first, he’d noticed the scared look on his lovers face when Owen had spoken.

“What, oh, Ianto’s having a bedside cabinet from me for his room at Martha’s and he wanted to catch me before I left.  I’ve just let him have my key to get it.”  He saw Ianto exhale slowly.  He so wanted to hold him, tell him everything was going to be alright, but until he knew what it was he couldn’t say much at all.

“Oh, right, I thought he’d had enough and was handing his notice in, after what he was saying this afternoon.”

Jack looked at Ianto who shook his head and whispered “I’ll explain later.”  Jack nodded and smiled.

“What can I do for you anyway Owen?  I was just coming to check on everyone.”

“I’ll leave you then Jack, thanks for the cabinet.  I’ll be at Martha’s when you want your key.”

“Fine, I’ll see you later.”

Ianto left the two men knowing that Jack was watching him as he walked off.

“Right Doc, what was it you wanted?”

“Oh just to ask if you wanted to come for a drink with us tomorrow night, you’ll get to meet my girlfriend.”

“As much as I’d love to meet her, unfortunately I’m busy, Martha’s cooking me a meal and I don’t want to back out.”

“That’s ok, I asked Ianto earlier and he’s busy too.  No worries, another time maybe?”

“Yeah, I’m sure there’ll be plenty of other times.  Now if you’ll excuse me, I must go check on everything before I leave the site.”

“Sure Jack, I’ll see you tomorrow then, goodnight.”

“Yeah, night Doc.”  Jack left him wanting to get home to see what was bothering his gorgeous Ianto.  He quickly made sure everything had gone well, said goodnight to the men who were clearing up then ran all the way home to see what had happened to frighten Ianto so much.

Ianto had reached Jack’s house, letting himself in he closed the front door and leant against it.  Taking deep breaths trying to calm himself down.  Making his way into the lounge he remembered Jack had said there was whisky in the sideboard.  He opened the door, took out the bottle, found a glass and poured a generous portion into it.  Replacing the bottle he closed the door and went to sit on the sofa.  Staring at the glass in his hand he sat on the edge of the cushion, remembering the last time he’d been on the sofa.  He’d had Jack’s arms around him and they’d kissed.  That seemed a lifetime ago rather than two days.  He smiled to himself remembering how it had felt having Jack kiss him.  He brought the glass up to his lips, lips that had parted when Jack’s tongue had asked for permission to enter.  Lips that had been on Jack’s body, on Jack’s length.  He shuddered remembering how good he’d felt.  He smiled again knowing that they would be together again in Jack’s bed that night.  Then he remembered why he was sat alone in the house waiting for Jack.

He didn’t know how long he’d been sat there staring at the glass but he heard movement in the hall, he put the glass on the floor and went to the door.  Seeing Jack coming through the front door he rushed over, pushed him up against the closed door, wrapped his arms around Jack and kissed him passionately.  Instinctively Jack’s arms went around him, holding him tightly, not wanting to break the connection to ask what was worrying his lover.  He knew Ianto would say in his own time.

Ianto broke away “hold me tightly Cariad, please.”

“Hey, I am sweetheart, I am.”  Jack tightened his grip on the young man, he could feel him shaking.  “Ianto sweetheart, come on tell me please, what’s wrong?  You’re really scaring me, what’s happened, is it something I’ve done?”

“Oh no Jack, it’s nothing you’ve done.  It’s something Owen said this morning.  Oh God Jack, I don’t know what to do.”

“If you don’t tell me I can’t help you.  Come on let’s go sit down, then you can tell me everything, ok?”

He held on to Ianto who nodded and they made their way into the lounge.  Jack sat on the sofa pulling Ianto down beside him.  Ianto stared into space as Jack looked at him, getting more worried with every quiet second that passed.

“Yan, please, you’ve got to tell me, otherwise I can’t help you.”

“What?  Oh yeah, sorry.”

“Is it something we’ve done and Owen’s found out?”

“No, nothing like that.”  Ianto took a deep breath, took Jack’s hands in his then told him all about Owen’s new girlfriend, and who she was.

“Are you sure it’s the same person.  Maybe there’s….”

“No Jack, he described Lisa’s friend to a T and anyway she used to date my cousin.  I’m scared Jack.  Scared that when she finds out I’m here and that I’m seeing someone she’ll go tell Lisa.”

“Well we’re going to have to sort that.  We’ve been invited out tomorrow haven’t we?”  Ianto nodded, “why don’t we go?”

“But what about….?”

“I have an idea, we could ask Martha to act as your girlfriend.”  He noticed Ianto’s eyes widen.

“But everyone thinks that you and Martha would make a good couple.”

“I know, all the more reason for you to turn up with her.  That way we could make a scene about it and put everyone off the scent of us being together.  I’m sure Martha would help us.  You know what she said this morning.  She’s pleased for us and won’t say anything and I trust her with my life.”

“Do you think she’ll go for it?”

“Let’s go ask her.  If we do it now we’ll have the rest of the night to ourselves.”

Ianto squeezed Jack’s hands and nodded.

Jack stood, pulled Ianto up and wrapped his arms around his young man.  “You are the most gorgeous man I’ve ever met Ianto Jones and nothing or no one, especially Gwen Cooper is going to separate us.  Besides we’ll be leaving here very soon. And when we get to New York we can start a new life together, forever or as long as you want me.”

“Always Cariad, always.”

“Right, let’s go see Martha, then you can explain what Cariad means.  Although even not knowing, it sounds beautiful especially coming from you.”

“It means….”

Jack stopped him with a kiss, “no sweetheart, tell me later, when we’ve got our story sorted out with Martha.”

“Ok” and he kissed him back.

When they arrived at Martha’s she opened the door with a surprised looked on her face.  “Ianto, Jack, I thought you were having tonight together?”

“We will, but we need your help with something.”

“Sounds serious, come on then let’s go to the kitchen.  Sam and Chris are in the lounge.”  Ianto looked scared, “don’t worry Ianto they’re playing cards so won’t disturb us.”

The men followed her into the kitchen, all three sitting down at the table with Ianto holding tightly on to Jack’s hand.

“Right boys, something has happened hasn’t it?”  They nodded, “so which one of you is going to tell me, because I’m not very good at guessing.”

Jack squeezed Ianto’s hand, “want me to tell Martha?”

“No Jack, I’ll do it.”  For the next half an hour Ianto explained all about Owen’s girlfriend.  When he’d finished Jack took over explaining their idea.  Martha smiled when Jack told her that everyone at the yard thought they’d make a good couple.

“Oh Jack, you don’t know how flattering that is, but I know it’s never going to happen.  And besides you two are meant to be together.  Have you said anything yet Jack?”

“No we’re sorting this out first, then we’ll talk.”  Ianto looked from his Captain to Martha, a concerned look on his face.  Jack noticed, “don’t worry sweetheart, it’s nothing to be frightened of.”

Martha smiled at Jack’s endearment.  “Ok boys, I’ll do what you suggested, I think it’s the only way it’s going to work.  That way it’ll take the heat off you two and if Ianto’s living here then we don’t have to be seen out together.  But you’ll have to keep up the pretence at work for a couple for a few days, then we can decide to end it because Jack’s anger, jealousy, which ever we think will convince them more, has come between us and you can tell them that you’re going away.  We don’t have to say where you’re going.  That way Gwen won’t be able to tell Lisa what’s happening.”

“Oh Martha, has anyone ever told you you’re a wonderful woman?”

“Not for a long time Ianto.”  She got up and kissed him.

“Thank you Martha, if I tell you something will you keep it to yourself?”

“Jack you know I will.”

“You said we could tell people that Ianto’s going away.  Well he is, we are.  Mr Ismay has given both of us passage on the Titanic.  We’re going to be working during the passage, but at least we’ll be together and we can start again in New York.”

“Oh boys that’s fantastic news.  Ok, so when’s this night out?”

“Tomorrow.  Is that ok?”

“Yeah Jack that’s fine.  Now go take this gorgeous young man home and talk, hold him, kiss him, but relax, everything is going to be alright.”

They stood and as they made their way to the door, Ianto turned to Martha,  “thank you, I feel a lot better now.”

“My pleasure, now go.  Make Jack happy.”  She kissed both the men and waved as they made their way up the street to Jack’s.

Chapter 7 -
