A/N Sorry for the delay in posting this Chapter. Things have just gone crazy at work. Hope it was worth the wait?
Ianto was the first to wake. He looked across at Jack who had finally fallen asleep in the early hours of the morning. Ianto carefully moved across to Jack, who still had hold of his hand, and kissed him gently.
Jack stirred. “Morning my love. How are you feeling this morning?”
“A little tender, but I’ll live. Owen tells me I was lucky the cracked rib didn’t go any more damage. He says I’ve got to take it easy for the next few days. So I’m afraid it’ll be gentle sex for now.” Ianto smiled
“Oh no, you are going to get completely well before we even think about that. I don’t want you hurting yourself more. And I’m sure we could think of a few things that will keep us occupied until your ribs are completely healed.”
Again Ianto smiled at his lover and leaned in for a kiss. Jack responded and felt Ianto wince as he put his arm around him.
“I’m sorry Yan, but you’re staying here today. I don’t want you aggravating those ribs. The furthest I will allow you to move is to the bathroom and back. You are going to leave everything else to me. I’ll sort the coffee out and the food, and if they want something else then they’ll have to get it themselves.”
Ianto laughed, but stopped abruptly as his ribs felt like they were going to burst through his chest. Even the bruises on his face seemed to hurt more this morning.
“Jack the last time you made everyone coffee you nearly poisoned us. I’ll be ok to put the coffee on, then I promise I’ll come back down here and rest.”
He leant over to Jack and kissed him. “Thank you cariad.”
“For coming to rescue me. Please don’t tell the others, but I was so scared, I thought I was going to die.”
“Hey, come on, I’m not going to say anything of the sort. To be honest I was terrified. I thought I was going to loose you.”
“Not if I can help it. You’re stuck with me.”
It was Jack’s turn to kiss his lover. Their tender moment was suddenly shattered with the sound of the roller door opening. Jack wanted to hug Ianto but daren’t in case he hurt him even more. He needn’t to have worried,Ianto pulled him in close and wrapped both arms around him.
“I love you Captain Harkness. Now come on let’s go and water the troops.”
Smiling Jack helped Ianto up the ladder and up into the kitchen. Noting the look of relief on their colleagues faces that Ianto was going to be all right.
Jack left the four of them chatting about the worst things that had happened to each of them. A macabre subject considering what could have happened to Ianto. He shuddered to push away the feelings he had if he ever lost his gorgeous Welshman.
He made his way down to the cells and to a waiting, somewhat scared Paul Archer. “Good morning Janet. Has our friend here been behaving himself?”
Janet growled and Jack noted that Archer seemed to scurry back into a corner of his cell.
“Good morning Mr Archer, and how did we sleep last night?”
“I didn’t, thanks to you and that….that thing over there.”
“Oh dear was Janet up to her old tricks again? I am sorry, but if we don’t feed her then she does get a bit agitated.”
“I don’t care, just get me out of here. I can’t stand this much longer.”
“Well you should have thought about that before you used Tosh and Ianto.”
“Please….Captain Harkness, I have to go and see my sister. I need to get out of here.”
“Well, let’s see. First I want that information I asked you for last night. Second you’re gonna apologise to two very important people and third, I’ll think about taking you to see your sister. But only if I believe what you’re saying. Got that?”
Paul nodded his understanding.
Jack opened the cell door and Paul slowly made his way out. Jack handcuffed him behind his back and pushed him up against Janet’s door, just for good measure.
They made their way in silence down to the interrogation room. Jack pushed him down on to a chair and proceeded to handcuff him to the table.
“Now talk, Archer, otherwise I’m not going to be responsible for what happens to you.”
Paul, Jack could see, was thinking how to explain why he’d done what he had to Tosh and then Ianto. Finally he spoke.
“Ok, I’ll tell you, but you’ve got to promise me I’ll get to see my sister.”
“I don’t make promises to scumbags like you, but go on, start talking.”
Paul told Jack all about his sister Karen and how she’d worked at Torchwood One when the Cybermen and the Daleks attacked. He told him that when she’d been found days later she’d been wandering around Canary Wharf talking to herself. No one seemed to know who she was. They had taken her to hospital and she’d developed an infection in her neck. The doctors had been baffled as to where the infection was originating, but when they X-rayed her they’d found an implant. As they’d tried to remove it, it had caused a brain haemorrhage, unbeknown to the surgeon it was growing and attacking her brain. They couldn’t decide where this had come from, they only knew it was something they had never seen before.
Paul’s family had put out a missing persons report when Karen had failed to contact them and the Metropolitan Police had traced the unknown patient and realised it was Karen. They’d been told that whatever had taken hold of itself in her brain couldn’t be removed. When her family had informed both Doctors and Police she’d worked for Torchwood they’d washed their hands of her and told them the best thing for them to do would be to put her in a care home and pray that the ending would be quick.
Unfortunately for Karen and her family it hadn’t been quick, and up until the day before, she’d been alive if only in a trance. Now Paul told Jack that she was in a coma and was unlikely ever to come out of it. Jack listened to the details and realised that it had probably been some sort of experiment that the Cybermen were doing. They’d been trying to upgrade people quicker to make their army stronger. He just hoped that Ianto wasn’t watching this interview on the monitors. He didn’t want him being reminded of Lisa. They’d gotten past that and had their new life. He didn’t want to take steps back in their relationship he wouldn’t be able to cope if Ianto….his Ianto left him.
“Ok, so you’ve told me what happened to Karen. Now tell me who your informant is at UNIT?”
“I’ll tell you, but can’t I have a break, I need a drink.”
“I’ll give you five minutes which is more than you deserve, considering you didn’t give Ianto a break when you had him in that warehouse.”
Jack left Paul to mull over what his next explanation would be and went to fine one of the others to take water to their visitor.
Reaching the main part of the hub he found all four of them staring at the monitor watching Paul Archer. He whispered to Owen to take the prisoner a drink, then took Ianto’s hand and led him to his office.
Jack noticed that Ianto had tears in his eyes. Jack carefully enveloped him in his arms, kissed his neck and whispered that everything was going to be alright.
Ianto pulled away and looked into the blue/grey eyes he loved so much.
“I’m sorry Jack, but this talk about Canary Wharf brought all that….that thing with Lisa back.”
“I know, I’m sorry you had to hear that, but that’s in the past and we are the present and the future, and nothing and no one is going to destroy us. Got that?”
“I love you Yan, and I’ll never leave you.”
“I love you too Jack, it’s just….just”
Jack quietened him with a kiss, feeling some of the tension leave Ianto as he did.
