Owen was waiting for Jack the following evening.  Something he never did unless there was a problem.  Jack’s immediate thought was Ianto.

“Jack can I have a word before you go onto the ward?”

“Yeah, sure what’s up Doc?”

“Great Jack, very witty.  No, seriously, I just want to warn you about two things that have happened today.”

“You’re worrying me Owen, come on tell me.”

“Firstly, Ianto....”

“Is he ok?  What’s happened?”

“Let me finish Jack, he’s been down to physio....”

“But I thought that wasn’t going to happen for a couple of days?”

“It wasn’t supposed to, but  on my advice they moved his appointment forward.  We want him mobile as soon as possible.”

“That’s great isn’t it?”

“In a way yeah, but he’s tired and in a bit of pain.  I’ve given him something to counteract that, but....”

“But what Owen?  You said there were two things.”

“Yeah, well....he’s....”

“He’s what?  I’m going to get angry in a minute if you don’t tell me.”

“He’s got a visitor.”

“Oh!  Who is it?”

“Lisa, you know his girlfriend.”

Jack’s face fell.  “I’ll go, he won’t want to see me if she’s turned up.  Tell him....tell him I’ll come and see him tomorrow night.”  Jack turned to leave.

“Don’t you dare walk out on me Harkness.  In fact don’t you dare walk out on him either.  He needs you.... he needs a friendly face.  By the look of things it’s not going too well with her.  Come on Jack go see him, I’m sure you’d help.  You know, a friendly good looking face with a killer smile.”

Jack turned back to face his friend.  “If you’re sure he wouldn’t mind?”

“No, I think he was looking forward to your visit.  He’s been looking at the clock since he got back from physio.”

“Ok, if you’re sure.”

Owen smiled, he’d known Jack long enough to know when he was attracted to someone.  And there was definitely something there, he just hoped he wasn’t reading the situation wrong.  For the second time in a week Dr Owen Harper prayed.

As Jack approached Ianto’s bed he could hear the heated conversation that was going on between him and this Lisa.  Owen had broken a confidence, something he’d not been happy about, and told Jack about Lisa, warning him that he couldn’t let on to Ianto he knew, otherwise Owen would be in serious trouble.  Jack had promised.

“Come on Ianto, let me help.”

“Why the hell should I let you help, this is your fault, well yours and Adams!”

“And pray, how do you work that one out, you were the one driving.”  Her voice was getting louder and some of the other visitors were turning to see who was shouting.

“Lisa for God’s sake keep your voice down, people are looking.  Anyway why come and visit me now, it’s nearly a week since it happened, so....?”

“Promise not to get angry?”

“And you think I’m not already angry, come on what else have you done to me?  You can’t top what’s already happened.”

“It’s....well it’s Adam.”

“What about him?”

“His mother threw him out when she found out about us, and well, as I was staying with him, me as well.”

“So what are you saying?  Come on, kick a man further down why don’t you.”

“We’ve....well we had nowhere else to go so....”

“Lisa, I haven’t got all night!”

“Well we’ve moved into our apartment.”

“What do you mean?”  It suddenly dawned on Ianto what she was saying.  “Shit Lisa, you mean my apartment?”

“Yeah, we didn’t have anywhere else to go.”

“So not content with taking you from me, you’re sleeping with him in MY bed!  Get out Lisa, leave me alone.  If I thought there might have been some spark left between us, it has surely just been extinguished.  Now get the hell away from me.  Oh and if you’re both planning on staying at my apartment, then you can buy it from me, because I don’t think I’ll ever be able to go back in there without thinking of the two of you in my bed.  Now leave, before I get the nurses to ask you to leave.”

“But Ianto please, we had nowhere to go!”

“Get out Lisa.  I’m going to be here for a couple of weeks then when I get out I’m collecting my clothes and I’ll find somewhere else.”

Jack had heard most of this conversation and he needed to go to Ianto.  His heart was breaking for this gorgeous man, he didn’t need these hassles from this woman, he had enough to deal with, without her adding to the mix.  He approached the bed and saw Lisa look up, Ianto was too upset Jack noticed, to see him approach.

“Yes, what can I do for you?”  Lisa snapped.

Ianto turned to see who she was talking to and when he saw Jack he smiled.  “Why it’s the Captain, where’s the coat tonight?  It’s good to see you.”

“Evening Ianto, I’m sorry, am I disturbing something?  I came to continue our conversation about the Radio, but if it’s a problem I’ll come back tomorrow.”

“No Jack, it’s no problem, Lisa was just leaving.  Weren’t you?”

“What....oh....erm, yeah.  Look Ianto I’m sorry about....about everything.”

“Just go Lisa, you know how I feel.  I’ll be calling for my things when I get out of here.”

Lisa looked at Jack, and smiled then she went to kiss Ianto but he turned his face away.  Jack noticed the start of tears in his eyes.  Lisa left them, her head down, Jack hoped she realised what she was doing to this man.

“Sorry about that Jack.  That was Lisa, my ex!”

“I’m sorry Ianto, are you ok?”

“I will be, not only is she having a baby by someone else, she’s moved him into my apartment.  She really knows how to kick a man when he’s down.”  He took a deep breath and looked at Jack, straight into the blue/grey depths he’d seen the other night, and felt something stir again.  He wasn’t sure what it was but if he was honest it made him feel good.

Jack sat down, “Hey you don’t have to apologise, we’ve all been through bad break ups, I’m no exception.”

“What happened Jack?  Oh God I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have said that.”

Jack surprised himself, and by the reaction from Ianto, his actions surprised him also.  As he sat down and reached out and held Ianto’s hand.  Ianto flinched at first but didn’t remove it, just looked at Jack and smiled.  Jack continued to hold the young man’s hand.  “My last relationship took me a while to get over.  We’d been together a couple of years, we’re in business together and have been since uni.  Well I found out that he’d not only been drinking heavily but had been taking drugs.  I’m not talking about the stuff like ecstasy, but the hard stuff, cocaine, heroin, you name it he’d experimented with it.  It was affecting his work and our relationship.  So I did the only thing I could, I booked him into rehab and told him to sort himself out before we could carry on.”

“And....did he?”

“You could say that.  Whilst he was in rehab he met a younger man, Cameron they called him, and they began an affair.  I only found this out when he came out of the place.  I wanted him back, but he told me it was over, that his drinking and drugs were my fault, and that he was going to live with Cameron.”

“Oh Jack I’m sorry.  But how was it your fault?”

“Oh the pressures of work, us being together 24/7.  He just couldn’t cope.  He did say he still loved me but couldn’t be with me anymore.”
“I’m sorry, how are things now?”

“He’s finished with Cameron as he’d gone back on drugs and Hart knows that if I find he has, then I’d buy his share of our company.  So he’s on his own again although he has said he wants us to try again.”

Jack felt Ianto tighten the grip he had on his hand.  “Is that going to happen Jack?”

“No....I’ll never go back to him.  I’ve had enough of his demands on a relationship, and he knows that.”  He felt the young man relax slightly.  He was also aware that they were still holding hands.  Jack then felt something , something that was sending sensations to his brain and further down his body, Ianto was slowly stroking his thumb across the back of his hand.

Jack looked down at their hands and up into the electric blue eyes that was Ianto Jones.  “Yan....I’m sorry, do you mind if I call you that?”

“No Jack, I like it.  No one’s called me that before, it’s....”

“Yan, ssshhh, I don’t want you doing or saying anything that you’re not comfortable with.  You’re vulnerable, you’ve just had a serious accident and your girlfriends been a complete shit towards you.  I realise this is a strange situation, here I am an openly gay man, making a pass at a straight man.”

“Jack....listen, if I didn’t want you to do that I’d have said so.  I don’t know what I’m feeling, I’ve never felt like this for a man before.  But I....I don’t know....feel alive when you’re here.  And if truth be known I’ve missed you during the day and have been waiting, impatiently I might add, for you to turn up.  I don’t know where this is going, but I have feelings for you.”  He stopped and looked at Jack, “say something Jack....please.”

“Wow, I....I erm....Oh Ianto.  I’ve thought of nothing but you since I met you a couple of days ago.  I’ve felt things, that have been dormant for a long time, but I daren’t say anything, I didn’t want to frighten you off.  Whatever you want I’ll go with.  I like you Ianto Jones and I want to get to know you better.  But only if that’s what you want.”

Ianto looked Jack in the eyes.  “Yes Jack it is.  I’m not saying it’s going to be easy, I’ve got a long way to go with my physiotherapy, then there’s the problem of not being in a relationship with a man before.  But....”

“But I’ll help you every step of the way.  And remember we’ll go at your pace, ok?”

Ianto looked at Jack and smiled.  He lifted their hands up and not caring what anyone thought, he kissed Jack’s hand.
