Tosh had been monitoring the police channels for the last couple of days and had heard several calls about a sighting of an octopus type creature in the bay. She’d not been too worried at the start but as the days went by the sightings were more frequent.
“Jack, you’d better come and listen to this. I’m not sure what’s going on but something’s not quite right.”
“What is it?”
“Do we get Octopus in the bay?”
“Erm….no, not unless the restaurants aren’t telling us something and they’ve decided to stock up ready for exotic dinners.”
“Jack, this could be serious.”
“Yeah and taking your loved ones for an expensive dinner is serious too. When was the last time Owen took you?”
“Last night actually. He found a beautiful French restaurant and we had a lovely time thank you. But Jack listen the calls to the police are getting more frequent are we going to do something about it?”
“Yeah I think we should, I’ll take Ianto and Gwen with me in the boat and go and check it out.”
Ianto and Jack smiled at one another, Jack’s cheeky grin told Ianto that he was up to something. Holding on to the side Ianto looked at Jack who nodded. Pushing the throttle forward Jack shot the boat out into the bay to screams from Gwen and laughter from Ianto. Jack looked across at his lover who was enjoying every minute, but Gwen looked like she was going to be sick, so he slowed down.
“Hey Gwen, you ok?”
“Thanks Jack, no….not really. What was that all about? I nearly brought my breakfast up. Not good first thing thank you. You’re mad Harkness do you realise?”
“Hey, I’ve not been out in her for a while I had to make sure she was ok.”
“She! Why are boats, cars always she?”
“Temperamental like a woman, isn’t that right Yan?”
“Hey Jack, don’t bring me into this thanks.”
They all looked at one another and laughed.
Making their way into the bay they heard Tosh on the comms, “Jack there’s more than one creature in the bay, I’ve just been monitoring the waters and the public were right, there is something down there. Be careful.”
“We will Tosh thanks. We’ll let you know what we find.”
Jack eased the boat to a stop and the three of them began checking the waters around them looking for any strange creatures or movement.
“Jack, look over there, what’s that?”
Gwen was pointing to a bright blue tentacle that had just surfaced and then disappeared as quickly. Jack leant over the side of the boat and swirled his hand in the water.
“Jack, cariad, be careful we don’t know what it is.”
“Look there’s another one over there.” Gwen was pointing to movement a couple of feet away to her side of the boat.
Jack moved across and saw what she was looking at. “Right we need to find out what it is and if we can get rid. It’s definitely not octopus I’ve never seen one that colour. We need to get in there and see if we can capture one or send them back through the rift. Ianto, Gwen, get suited up and get in there.”
“But Jack, I’ve not dived for a long time. Are you sure I’ll be ok?”
“Yeah Yan is an expert and he’ll look after you. Won’t you sweetheart?”
“Yes Jack. Gwen it’s not as bad as it looks, come on we shouldn’t be down there too long.”
“Ok, but just don’t leave me. I don’t want to get lost.”
The pair of them went down and changed into the wetsuits that were always on hand.
Emerging from the cabin Jack said “Mmm Ianto in rubber, what I wouldn’t like to do to you right now!”
“Please guys leave it till we get back then you can live out your fantasies then.” Laughed Gwen.
Ianto blushed and kissed his lover tenderly. “Mmm wait till we get home cariad, I’ll….”
“Hey guys you do know we can hear you back here and now I have images in my mind that I didn’t really want this time in the morning.”
“Owen you shouldn’t be listening to our private conversations. But if you want to join us I’m sure Tosh wouldn’t mind.”
The heard laughter and choking from back in the Hub. Jack had purposely left his comms open when Ianto and Gwen had appeared.
“Ok joking over, let’s get on with why we’re here.”
They entered the water and Ianto made sure Gwen was ok, when she nodded they dived under the surface and swam towards the last sighting of the creature. Ianto kept checking on Gwen who was quickly remembering everything she’d been taught about diving. Thumbs up, she swam ahead of Ianto and he saw that he had nothing to worry about with her.
They continued to swim around the last location of the creature, but not finding anything they went further afield. Suddenly Gwen stopped quickly, pointing to something moving ahead of her. Ianto went to join her and seeing the blue creature he pointed for her to surface. They made their way up to alert Jack that they’d found them.
Jack saw them surface 10 metres ahead and slowly manoeuvred the boat towards them. Ianto took off his face mask and said “We’ve found them, they’re about 5 metres down and there are about four of them. They’re sleeping, or I think they are, so if we can contain them we could hang on to them until the rift opens up again. I’m certain they’re alien, but I’ve not seen anything like them before. They’re not very big so that box we have down in the hold should be big enough.”
“Ok, here’s what we’ll do. You get them in the box as quickly as possible, if they’re sleeping then it shouldn’t be too difficult. Just watch out for others.” Jack went below and retrieved the containment box. Handing it to Ianto he caressed the side of his face as the mask was replaced. “Be careful Yan, I want you safe.”
Ianto, thumbs up, dived again and the two of them swam back to the creatures. They managed to get three of the creatures in the box before they woke up. Ianto has just about to push the final one in when it turned on him. It wrapped its tentacles around his waist, chest and neck. Gwen immediately took the box from him and surfaced.
Ianto tried to prise the creature from him but as he did so it tightened itself. Gwen had reached the surface and quickly told Jack what had happened. He pulled her into the boat and took her breathing tank. Without changing, he didn’t have time, he dived into the water and swam towards Ianto.
The more Ianto struggled to remove the creature the more it tightened itself around him. He remembered seeing Jack approaching him, but he didn’t remember anything else. He passed out.
Jack grabbed his lover and got him back to the boat. “Gwen, get us back to the Hub….NOW! We need to get this off him, he’s still breathing but his pulse is getting weaker. Move….come on….now!”
Gwen did as she was told, she saw the look of concern in Jack’s eyes and knew the situation wasn’t good.
“OWEN….Owen, get your arse here now. Ianto needs help. Tosh see if you can find out what they are. We need to help him….please.”
Owen ran into the medical bay and seeing Ianto covered in the creature “listen Jack if you want me to fix this you’re going to have to let me at him. Come on, go sit down or make a coffee I’ll look after him.”
“No Owen I’m not leaving him. Do what you have to I’m staying.” Jack continued to hold Ianto’s hand as Owen worked to try to remove the creature.
Tosh came down to the medical bay “Jack, Owen, I’ve found out what they are. They are a version of octopus they apparently mutated into this when they got stuck here 150 years ago. They were originally more like a jelly fish but they somehow merged with an octopus and this is the result. They are now known as the Polipi. They’ve appeared before up in Glasgow. Torchwood 2 had records of seeing them in the River Clyde but before they could capture them they disappeared and were not seen again. This is the first sighting in many years. What they did say in their reports was that they had an adverse effect to alcohol, especially whisky.”
“Oh right, they get drunk and then die. Not a good way to go.”
“Owen, come on this is serious. I’ve got some whisky in my office, Gwen it’s in my desk drawer, the bottom one. I’ve got it for emergency purposes and this is an emergency. Go get it quickly.”
Gwen shot off for the drink. Bringing it back she handed it to Owen who filled a hypodermic with the golden liquid and injected it into the body of the creature. He checked Ianto’s pulse as the creature fell off.
“Wow, Tosh, I’m so glad whisky doesn’t have that effect on humans, imagine the mess the hospitals would have to clean up if they did.”
“Owen, for goodness sake stop messing and check on Yan. Is he breathing?”
Owen checked for a pulse, none. He turned to Jack. “I’m sorry Jack, he’s stopped breathing….again.”
“Leave us, please. I want to be with him when he comes round. I don’t want him to have an audience. He’s still embarrassed about this sometimes. I want you to go and get on with sorting those three Polipi’s out in the cells. I’ll let you know when he’s back with us.”
The three of them looked at Jack then at Ianto and nodded. They knew Jack worried that one day Ianto may not come back to them. So they did as they were told.
Jack didn’t have to wait too long for his lover to come back to him. And as he always did the first thing he shouted when he came around was Jack’s name.
“I’m here sweetheart, you’re going to be alright. Owen got rid of the creature. He gave it a drink and it sort of passed out. Ok so it keeled over and died.”
“What was it Jack?”
“Polipi. A sort of octopus type mutated creature. The gang are down in the cells getting rid of the other three. How’re you feeling?”
“Like I’ve been in a vice for the last week. My ribs hurt, in fact I don’t think there’s a part of me that isn’t bruised.”
Jack kissed him. “Come on let’s get you down to our quarters and get you sorted out.”
“Mmm that sounds like a good idea Jack. I could do with you sorting me out.” He smiled at the thought.
“Oh yeah. My only wish is that I had more than two arms to hold you with. Just think what we could do if we had more! I can just imagine making love to you if we were multi limbed.”
“Mmmm nice thought Jack, but I love you just the way you are with two arms. And after my encounter with the Polipi two arms are plenty for me, especially what you do with them. But I do need reminding. Take me to heaven Jack.”
“My pleasure Ianto, oh and it’s going to be your pleasure too!”
Smiling they made their way down to their quarters, knowing that the others could cope without them.
