A/N This is completely AU and is all thanks to zazajb for challenging me to have a go. Apologies for any bad geography of Cardiff and Wales, I was never any good at the subject when I was at school
A/N2 Apologies for anyone who is getting this more than once as it's cross posted.
Jack found himself clock watching. He couldn’t wait to leave work. Hart had been on at him all morning about not ringing him the previous night. They’d got four accounts that Hart had brought in who they’d found were not paying on time. Hart had investigated them further and found they were the same people, just using pseudonyms to borrow more money. Jack had been furious when he’d found out, and threatened Hart with the fraud investigators if he didn’t get it sorted. Hart had been trying to contact him the previous night to tell him he’d sorted it out.
“Jack, how many more times do I have to say sorry? I will investigate prospective clients in the future. Please can we draw a line under this? I really am sorry, and what with everything that’s happened with Cameron, I’ve not been....”
“I don’t care what’s going on in your love life. That stays at home, you don’t bring it into work. Got that?” Hart nodded. “As regards those accounts, I’ll give you till the end of next week to get their money. Otherwise we’re going to have to call in the fraud investigators.”
Hart nodded again, “Look Jack, can we go for a drink tonight? I’ve missed you.”
“NO!....no John we can’t go for a drink. We’re finished, over, don’t you get that? We had an interesting couple of years, but I’ve moved on and ....and so should you. Forget Cameron, forget what we had and get back out there and find someone who’ll love you for who you are. Anyway, I’m busy tonight.”
“Oh, what’re you doing?”
“What I’ve been doing every night for the past three years because I’m in charge, and that’s the Hospital Radio.”
“They can do without you for one night, can’t you give it a miss? Go on, come with me for a change.”
“Look John, we had a good time, most of the time, it was fun, but that was then and this is now. Get over it, I have.” Jack looked at Hart, smiled and went back to the report he had to get finished for the bank.
Hart was going to say he still loved him but thought better of it. Instead he would show Jack how much he loved him. He left the office and, on his way back to his own office he began formulating a plan to get Jack back.
Jack watched Hart go. He couldn’t get drawn back into that world, he’d had enough of his drinking the last time. Ok, their sex, most of the time, had been good, but towards the end Jack couldn’t prove it, but he was certain Hart was on some kind of drug. When Hart had met Cameron it had been tough at first, the affair, not knowing then finding out by accident. But in the end Jack had decided that it had been the best thing, or so Jack hoped, that could happen to his ex, and he seemed to have sorted himself out. He hoped he wouldn’t go back to drinking and taking drugs. Jack made a mental note to keep an eye on him. If he could move on then so could Hart. Jack smiled at the thought of seeing a certain Ianto Jones later on that night.
Ianto woke with a dull throbbing in his leg, a reminder of what he’d lost. He still had feelings for Lisa, but this time they were feelings of hatred. How could she have done that? She loved him. Well apparently not enough to talk things through. No, instead she’d gone with Adam, why?
He turned over to face the window, tears running down his face. He would show her, he would move on, he’d find someone who loved him. He’d get back to work, he felt happy when he was stood in front of a classroom passing his knowledge on to the students. He wiped his eyes as Doctor Harper appeared at his bedside.
“Morning Mr Jones. How are you feeling this morning?”
“My leg is aching this morning, but otherwise ok.”
Owen could see that he wasn’t ok. He had smiled to himself when he’d seen Jack talking to this young man last night. They both needed someone to talk to. Without Jack realising Owen had given him a purpose. Owen Harper came across to most as an acerbic medic. He had to admit that he was pleased with that reputation, but to Jack and Toshiko, his lover, he was a different person. Jack had helped Owen when he’d lost his fiancé Katie, and had introduced him to Tosh. So he always felt some sort of responsibility for Jack, but he didn’t like to show those feelings very often.
“I think Mr Jones, we’ll have you out of that bed today. You can sit in the chair and rest your leg that way. How does that sound?”
“If you think it’ll be ok, then yep I’ll go for it. I don’t want to ruin your good work.”
“Oh you won’t do that. My stitching will match anything that can be done on a machine.”
They both laughed and Owen saw the young man brighten. He was a good looking man and Owen was just glad that he’d managed to save him.
“Any visitors planned for today then? Are we going to see your girlfriend, wife back again?”
“What....what do you mean?”
“Well when you were up in intensive care, a young lady came and sat by your bed for two days.” Owen went on to describe the girl whom Ianto recognised as Lisa.
Ianto was shocked, maybe Lisa did still love him. But why hadn’t she been to see him now he was on the ward? No, she wouldn’t do that, she didn’t want him, she just felt sorry for him.
“No....they’ll be no one. She....that was Lisa, won’t be back. She’s the one I have to thank for this.” He said pointing at his leg. “We’d argued, she told me she didn’t love me anymore and that she was having someone else’s baby.”
Owen looked at the young man, “I’m....I’m so sorry.”
“No, I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have said anything. You don’t want to hear the mess my life is in. Besides there are other people more worse off than me.”
“I’m sorry if I brought up some bad memories there. And here I am trying to cheer you up.”
“Don’t worry Doctor, as soon as I can get out of here, I’ll get back to work and forget her.”
“What kind of work do you do?”
“I teach Drama at the St Cyres Comprehensive School. I love it, especially the enthusiasm of the lower ability students. They are always more passionate about the subject than the higher ability students.”
Owen could see by the animated look on Ianto’s face that he really loved his job. “Well Mr Jones, the sooner we get your leg sorted out, the quicker you’ll be back in front of your classes.”
“Thank you Doctor, and please, it’s Ianto. Only my students call me Mr Jones.”
“Ok, Ianto it is.” Owen got up to go.
“Erm....what time do the staff at the Hospital Radio begin their rounds of the wards?” Ianto, why did you ask that? What are you doing? Ianto thought about the blue/grey eyes he’d seen last night and the kindness of that man.
Owen had his back to Ianto and smiled to himself well Jack you’ve done it again. You’ve made an impression on this young man. Turning back he said “it’s usually around 6.30 or 7 when they start to appear. Any reason?”
“Oh....erm....not really, it’s just that guy from last night....Jack I think his name was, asked if I wanted a song playing. Well I’ve thought of one.”
“Do you want me to ring down to the studio and let them know the title?”
“No....no that’s alright, but thank you.” God Ianto don’t be too quick to say too much about Jack, this man might get the wrong idea. “I’ll wait until they come round, I’ll have decided for definite by then.”
“No problem, if there’s anything you need just let our nurses know, that’s what they’re here for. I’ll be back at the end of my rounds and we’ll get you out of bed.”
“Thanks Doc.” Ianto was beginning to feel better. He would be ok when he could get back to work. In the meantime he was going to stop feeling sorry for himself. Adam was welcome to Lisa. She wasn’t worth thinking about. He started thinking about the Radio and Jack, and found himself smiling at the prospect of talking to him again.
Owen glanced back into the ward and noticed a smile on the lips of Ianto Jones. He hoped, no he knew that this young man was going to be alright.
Jack found the day dragging. He wanted to escape. He’d found himself thinking more and more about the young man in hospital. There was something about his eyes that pulled you into them. He felt something stirring in him that he’d not felt for a long time. Stop it Harkness, you’re thinking too much into the situation. He’s straight and not in the slightest bit interested in you. Jack forced himself to get back to work. He looked at his watch, 3.30pm, only three more hours then he can get back to the hospital.
He smiled to himself, unaware that Hart was watching him through the window. You used to smile like that for me Jack, who is it now? Hart decided that was his next research job, to find out who was making Jack happy. It was his job to make Jack happy and no one else’s.
