By the time Ianto had left, Jack was feeling the strain of the late night. Looking at his watch – 4.30pm – he’d had enough. He went through to Dawn “look let’s call it a day, go home, have a relaxing weekend.”
“Don’t you want me in for the induction tomorrow?”
“No, I think I can manage, but thanks for the offer.”
“Well you know where I am if you need me. Have a good a weekend as you can. Are you coming in Monday morning or going straight to the site?”
“I’m going straight to the site, but I’ll make sure everything is sorted for you, and remember I’m only a phone call away if anything major crops up.”
“Yeah Jack, I know. It’s nice to see you animated this much about something again. Remind me to thank Chris and Damien next time I see them.” They both laughed. “Ok Jack, if there’s nothing else I’ll see you Monday morning.”
“No, there’s nothing, now go, have yourself a good weekend.”
“Thanks Jack, bye.”
She left him making his way back into his office. He sat on the sofa in there thinking about Ianto Jones, and how the slight touch of hands had had such an intense effect on him. He had to find out more about this young man. He’d not felt like this about anyone for a very long time. Maybe the coat will help. Oh come on Jack get a grip, the man is straight. He shook his head and smiled, you can’t blame a man for dreaming! He picked up his jacket, fished in the pocket for his keys and left. His thoughts on the induction tomorrow and seeing Ianto Jones again.
As he opened his front door the smell of food cooking invaded his nostrils. He smiled as he closed the front door. “Hi guys, I’m home!” he laughed as Chris put his head around the kitchen door.
“Hope you don’t mind, we’ve made dinner?”
“Nope, don’t mind at all.”
“Good, it’ll be ready in about ten minutes.”
“Great, thanks, I’ll just go and get changed.”
“Jack, you ok?”
“What….erm….yeah, I’m fine. I’m just tired that’s all. The dinner party the other night is just catching up with me. I’ll be ok.” How could he say anything to these two about Ianto Jones, he’d only just met him and how could he explain his feelings for him when he couldn’t understand them himself.
“If you’re sure, you’re ok, I’ll get back to helping Damien, he’s not the greatest with cooking.”
“No, you go back, I’ll just go get changed.”
“Listen Jack, if ever you want to talk you know where I am.” Chris put his hand on Jack’s arm and squeezed.
“Yeah, thanks. I’ll be back in a minute.” He disappeared upstairs. He sat on his bed this is stupid Jack, you don’t know anything about him, you shouldn’t be having these feelings about the young man. He couldn’t get those blue eyes out of his mind. Come on Jack, pull yourself together, you’ll only have the boys downstairs questioning you if you don’t. He changed into trackie bottoms and a Captain America t-shirt then went to join his friends for dinner.
The conversation all evening was relaxed and both Chris and Damien told Jack stories of their work and things that had happened to them, both good and bad. Naturally the talk turned to the building of their house and they kept thanking Jack for taking on the contract. Jack found his mind wandering each time the talk got onto the house. He was thinking of Ianto Jones.
“Jack….Jack, I said have you found all the contractors you need?”
“What….erm….oh yeah. Sorry, I was just thinking about the next few days, it’s going to be crazy.” How could he say anything about the young Welshman?
“Oh, and here we thought you’d found a young man!”
Jack was just about to take a mouthful of coffee when Chris made that comment and he nearly choked on it.
“Jack, hey sorry, you ok?”
“Yeah I’m fine thank you. What made you say that?”
“Well you’ve not really been with us all night, your mind has definitely been elsewhere and….and the last time that happened you’d just met Hart. Come on Jack spill….is there someone?”
“No….no there’s no-one….it’s….it’s just….”
“Just what, you know Damien and I won’t say anything, not after the things we’ve told you.”
“I know, thanks guys, I just need to….to sleep.”
“Jack, you’re not leaving it at that, we want to help.” Chris looked across to Damien and reached for his lovers’ hand. Jack knew they wouldn’t judge him and he had to say something, all this thinking about Ianto Jones was killing him. Maybe if he told these two friends they would tell him what to do.
“Look guys if I tell you something, promise you won’t laugh?”
“Hey come on, it can’t be that bad, can it? Look tell us if you want but if you don’t want to say anything that’s ok too.”
“Chris, you two are the best friends a guy could have and I’m so pleased you agreed to stay here whilst we build you house.”
“Hey it’s us that have to thank you. Now….stop beating about the bush and tell us what’s going on.”
“Ok, but promise me one thing?”
“If we can.”
“Just don’t interrupt me, let me finish then you can call me stupid or whatever, when you’ve heard the whole story.”
“We promise” Chris looked at Damien then at Jack. Damien moved closer to his lover and draped his arm around Chris’ shoulders. They sat back to allow Jack to explain in his own time.
For the next half an hour Jack told them everything that had happened, from Owen giving him Ianto’s number, listening to the voice of the young man on the phone to his meeting with him this afternoon and the effect he had on Jack when he looked at the intense blue eyes. Jack even told them about the feelings he had when he’d shaken hands with the man.
“”Wow!” exclaimed Damien, when Jack finally finished his explanation. “That is not as stupid as you think.” He looked at Chris. “I was the same when I first met Chris here. I’d gone backstage at one of his shows and was introduced to him. I knew then that I wanted to be with him.”
“And I knew I wanted to be with Damien. Now what are you going to do about this Ianto Jones?”
“I don’t know, I don’t want to come across too heavy and frighten him off, I’ll lose my APM if I do. Besides from what Owen’s told me he’s straight, he’s just broken up with his girlfriend.”
“Look, what you have to do is talk to Owen, he’s his friend isn’t he?” Jack nodded, “well there’s your answer, he’ll be able to help you.”
“NO!....sorry that was a bit sharp, no I don’t want Owen to know, you know what he can be like. I’ll just have to find out for myself.”
“Hey if we can do anything just let us know.”
“Thanks guys” Jack looked at his watch, 10.30pm. “If you don’t mind I’m going to call it a night. I’ve got Health and Safety Induction all day tomorrow and possibly Sunday morning, and I need some sleep.”
“Ok, just remember, we’re here if you want to talk.”
“Thanks guys….goodnight.” He made his way to his bedroom all the while thinking about Ianto and the conversation he’d just had with the boys. He made up his mind what he was going to do. He’d not say or do anything just yet, he’d see how things progressed once they got to site, then he’d organise a works night out, invite Chris and Damien so the team could meet the owners of the house. Yep that was what he would do. He climbed into bed thinking about Ianto Jones.
His alarm woke him with a start. Remembering why he’d set it so early for a Saturday, Jack climbed out of the warm cocoon and made his way to the shower. He was smiling to himself when he heard a knock on his bedroom door.
“Yeah!” he yelled.
“Jack, Damien’s got the coffee on, do you want a full fried breakfast?”
“Yeah, that would be great thanks. I’ll be down in ten minutes.”
“No problem, see you then.”
Jack hurried and dressed then made his way to his friends.
“We thought you’d like something to keep your strength up today, what with all those hot builders in one room. You never know what might happen” giggled Chris
“Just ring us if they all become too much for you. We can always come and show them how to be safe!”
Jack nearly choked on his coffee. “Hey, leave the builders to me thank you. You have each other.”
“Yeah, we know, and wouldn’t have it any other way.” Chris looked across at Damien and smiled.
Jack noticed the love the pair of them radiated. They were so in love with one another you didn’t have to ask them, you could see it in their eyes.
“Right boys, thanks for the fantastic breakfast, but I really must go. I don’t want to be late, that’s not going to show my staff good working practice is it? I’ll see you both tonight. It’s my turn to cook, so I’ll call for things on the way home.”
“Great, we’ve got things to sort out so we’ll see you later. Have a good day and don’t do anything we wouldn’t do!” They all laughed, remembering the conversation from the previous night.
Jack arrived at Torchwood House just as Gwen and Rhys were arriving. “Morning Miss Cooper, Rhys, you’re both early!”
Wow Jack, you look hot in that coat, hope you’re going to be wearing it on site. “Didn’t want to let our new boss down.” She looked into his eyes, and remembering the reactions from yesterday, she smiled. This was one man who was not going to resist her charms, she would make sure of that.
Jack held the door open for her. “Mmm and a gentleman too, hey Rhys, you could learn a few things from Mr Harkness here.”
“I aim to please.”
Oh you don’t know how much Mr Harkness, you don’t know how much.
As Jack turned to go through the doors Ianto came running up behind “I’m not late am I?” He said breathlessly. “I went for a jog this morning and was gone longer than I wanted. I’m sorry if I’m a bit dishevelled, I’ve only just got out of the shower.”
“Jack noticed his damp hair and pictured in his mind’s eye a naked Ianto in the shower with water cascading down his body. He had to shake his head “erm….no….you’re not late, it’s us who are early. Don’t worry, come on I’ll take you all to the lecture theatre.”
“Great thanks” said a slightly out of breath Welshman.
Jack had to really concentrate hard on the day ahead, as the image of a wet Welshman with a combination of breathy Welsh vowels was causing a reaction below his waistline that he really didn’t want these three people to see. He was thankful that he had his Great coat on and could wrap it around himself.
