Summary: Ianto needs Jack when the stranger appears
Disclaimer: I own none of the characters, I just like to experiment with them from time to time.
Jack was in his office when Tosh arrived for work. Smiling to himself he noticed a certain spring in her step. She glanced up to Jack’s office and he winked at her in return. He would talk to her later in the day. He didn’t want to pry but he was eager to know if she was all right. He didn’t want her to get hurt again.
Tosh emerged through the roller door feeling like a teenager again. She couldn’t believe what she had actually done yesterday. She was still on a high and if she was honest with herself she was missing Paul. Don’t be stupid she thought you’ve only just met him. He’s just an escape from work. Besides he’ll be going back to London soon. Looking up, she saw Jack watching her. She smiled at him and in return he winked at her in good morning.
Owen and Gwen arrived for work together, grinning like a couple of school children. They saw Tosh, smiled at her and went off to their workstations. About ten minutes later Gwen went over to Tosh.
“Are you better? Jack said you weren’t well yesterday. Was it something you’d eaten?”
“Oh....er....yes. It was my own fault. I didn’t cook some chicken enough. But I’m ok now thanks. I spent most of the day in bed.” She giggled to herself at that last remark. Yes she had spent the day in bed, but wouldn’t Gwen love to know who with?
“Well, we’re pleased you’re back and ok now. We did miss you.”
Tosh thanked Gwen and went off to speak to Jack.
“Hi Tosh. You ok?”
“Yes Jack, I’m fine thank you. I just want to say thanks for yesterday and not telling the others the real reason I wasn’t here.”
“Hey, no problem. Although Yan was with me when you phoned, so he knows. I hope that’s ok?”
“Look Jack, I don’t mind Ianto knowing. Like I said before, it’s just ....I don’t want Gwen and Owen knowing just yet.”
“I know. Sorry I couldn’t get to you before Gwen did to warn you what I’d told them, but looking at how you handled her just now, you played along with the story just fine.”
“Thanks again, you’re a good friend.” She said as she kissed his cheek.
“Hey, you’ll have Ianto jealous if he sees you doing that!”
“Ianto has no worries, the pair of you are so much in love, no-one will ever come between you. By the way where is he?”
“Oh he got a call from his sister wanting to know when he would be visiting next. She’s complaining she hasn’t seen him since he told her about us. I think she just wants to make sure her little brother is ok!”
Tosh laughed “I’ve not seen Ianto so happy since the two of you got together, Rhi has nothing to worry about.”
“Yeah, I know, but she just likes to see him from time to time.”
Jack’s phone rang “Speak of the devil, it’s Ianto.”
“Ok I’ll leave you to talk, I’ll catch up with you later.”
“Morning my love.”
“What do you mean morning, you saw me, all of me, before I left.”
“I know, I’m just missing you.”
“I miss you too Jack. Anyway, listen, Rhi’s invited us to dinner tonight. She wants an answer now please. What do I tell her?”
“Tell her yes. It’s about time I met her. Hey Yan you can also tell her that she has a gorgeous, sexy brother.”
“Jack! I can’t say anything like that to her, but ok I’ll tell her we’ll be there. She says dinner’s at 7.30pm”
“Ok, great. Are you on your way back now? I’m still missing you. I’m bored, I want to take you to bed.”
“Yes Jack, I’m on my way back. But what will the others say if we keep disappearing?”
“Oh don’t worry about them. I’ll sort them out. One more thing...”
“I love you Ianto Jones.”
“I love you too Jack, see you soon.”
Closing his phone Jack was thinking how pleased he was that Ianto’s sister had accepted who he was and that her little brother was in a relationship with a man who loved him.
Paul had been pleased that Tosh had stayed the night. He had wanted to get more information from her but didn’t want to push his luck and frighten her off. He’d made love to her when she got back to the hotel and they had spent a dreamless sleep wrapped in each others’ arms.
Now he had to put his plan in motion. First on the agenda for today was to visit the Grove Estate and find exactly where Rhiannon lived.
Looking at his watch, quarter to eight, just the time when everyone will be leaving for work and the kids leaving for school. If I get there as soon as possible I may see her taking the children to school. He was deep in thought when he picked up the phone and rang reception to order a taxi.
Before he left his room he retrieved a photograph from the safe of Rhiannon and Ianto. His contact had sent it to him. Just then his mobile rang. Looking at the caller ID he saw it was the hospice where Karen was.
Paul Archer, good morning, what can I do for you?”
“I’m sorry Mr Archer, but Karen has taken a turn for the worse. We went to check on her early this morning and we are sorry to have to inform you that she has slipped into a coma. We were wondering if you were coming to see her?”
“I’m sorry, but I’m not at home at present. I’m out of the country on a business trip and unfortunately I’m not sure when I’ll get back. Please just do what you can for her. I will be there as soon as I possibly can.”
“All right sir. Again I am so very sorry to have to ring you with this news. We will do everything in our power to help her. Goodbye for now Mr Archer.”
Paul hung up. He knew this may happen. They had warned him when she first went to the hospice. He didn’t realise it would be so soon. Torchwood will pay he said to himself. More now than ever, Jack Harkness will suffer the pain I’m going through. He is going to watch his beloved Ianto Jones die a very slow and painful death.
His room phone rang, it was reception telling him that his taxi had arrived. Making his way down he began formulating a plan to make Ianto Jones suffer and beg for death. He was grinning as he got in the taxi and gave the driver the address.
Ianto had left Jack early this morning. After the call and several text messages from his sister he decided he had to go, if only to shut her up. Before he’d left he and Jack had made passionate love. This had become their morning ritual. They couldn’t believe how happy they both were. They realised they were meant to be together and nothing and no-one would ever come between them. They were two halves of one whole and it would remain so until ..... No that didn’t bear thinking about. Jack had promised he would never leave him no matter what age did to him. He had told Ianto that he had waited too long for someone like him to come along and he would be “damned if anyone or anything was going to destroy their love.”
Smiling to himself he knocked on Rhi’s door, she opened it with a questioning look.
“So what’s making my little brother smile this morning then?”
“What? Oh, erm. I was just thinking about Jack.”
“Oh, right. If he puts that kind of smile on your face he must be a good man.”
“Yeah Rhi, he is. Erm, please don’t laugh, but....I....well I love him. There I’ve said it. I wasn’t going to tell you, but I can’t keep it to myself any longer. And before you ask, yes, Jack loves me too.”
Stunned at the sudden openness from her brother, Rhiannon pulled him into the house and hugged him.
“I’m really pleased for you Ianto. You deserve to be happy after....after...”
“You mean after Lisa? Yeah, I can say her name and don’t fall to pieces anymore. Now can we talk about what you want and the reason for all the text messages.”
For the next hour they discussed how she would love for them to go round for dinner and speaking to Jack they arranged the meal for that night.
Arriving on the Grove Estate Paul couldn’t believe his luck. There in front of him was a black SUV with “TORCHWOOD” emblazoned across the roof. He paid the taxi driver and went to wait in the park opposite, hoping that people wouldn’t question who he was.
He spent the next half an hour watching the block of houses opposite the park. They all looked the same. Two storey buildings, with the same style windows and doors. It looked as though the council had got a job lot when they built them. All the houses were pebble dashed. How could someone live in a place like this? Why would someone like living on and estate where everything was drab and boring.
He was brought out of his reverie by the opening of the front door of one of the properties. Smiling he saw Mr Jones leaving. Paul watched as he hugged his sister goodbye. He stood watching as Ianto pulled away, calculating how long it would take for Ianto to drive back to Torchwood’s base. He had, he estimated, 45 minutes to execute his plan and get him back to this estate.
With deliberate strides Paul went up to Rhiannon’s door and knocked. It was answered a minute later by his bait.
“Oh, I’m sorry to bother you. My name is Paul Archer, I’m with the Neighbourhood Watch Scheme. We would like to set up a group in this area and are looking for people to volunteer.”
“Oh, I’m sorry but I don’t really have the time. I have two children to look after, a husband and I work part time.”
“Oh well, would you just think about it. I’ll call back in a few minutes for your answer. I’ve just got a couple more houses to call at.”
“I’ll have a think, but I don’t really have the time. Sorry.”
Paul thanked her. As he walked up the path he could feel her watching him. Right he thought part two of my plan!
He went back and knocked on Rhi’s door again.
Opening it she said, “Look I told you I don’t have time for this.”
“Yes, I heard you the first time. I was just making sure I’d got the right house. I’m not from Neighbourhood Watch.”
“Well what the hell do you want?”
“Oh, you’ll find out very soon. Now get inside, I don’t want to make a scene on your doorstep.”
He pushed Rhiannon inside. Knowing that they were on their own. Her husband was at work and the kids were at school.
“Look Mr Archer, or whatever your name is. What do you want? I haven’t got any money. Why are you doing this?”
“Oh, it’s not your money I want. It’s your brother!”
“Ianto! What....what do you want with him? He doesn’t live here.”
“I know, but you’re going to get him back here NOW! Got that?”
Rhiannon was getting scared but she didn’t want to show this man she was frightened.
“What do you want with Ianto? What’s he ever done to you?”
“Oh, it’s not Ianto that’s done anything, it’s his lover who I want. But to get him I need your little brother. Get him on the phone and tell him you need him back here. I don’t care what you tell him I just want him here.”
Shaking Rhiannon picked up the phone and dialled.
Ianto was about half way back to the Hub when his phone rang. He pulled over, looked at the called ID, saw it was Rhi and answered “Now what Rhi, we’ve said we’ll be there, what’s wrong?”
“Ianto, please just listen.”
“Rhi, what’s the matter, are you ok?”
“Yan....just listen, please. You need to get back here now. I’ve had an accident, I fell and twisted my leg under me. I can’t get up. I need you to come back and go to the hospital with me.”
“Ok. Look, hold on I’ll be there as soon as I can. Call an ambulance. Listen Rhi everything will be ok.”
Closing his phone he turned the SUV around and for the first time he drove like Jack back to his sisters.
“That was very good Rhiannon. As soon as your brother gets here we won’t have to bother you anymore.”
“Please don’t hurt Ianto, he’s done nothing wrong.”
“Maybe he has, maybe he hasn’t. He works for Torchwood doesn’t he?”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about. He works for Special Ops. What’s Torchwood?”
“Oh very clever. You have to say that don’t you? You have to say you don’t know what Torchwood is. He’s told you to say that hasn’t he?”
“Ianto doesn’t talk about what he does, so I’m telling the truth. I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Ok.....ok, I don’t believe you, but I don’t want to argue with you. Let’s just wait for little brother to get back here.”
“What do you want with him?”
“I’ve told you. It’s not really Ianto, it’s his lover I want, but to get to the mighty Jack Harkness I have to destroy all the things he loves and that includes your brother.”
“Please, please, don’t hurt Ianto, he’s all I’ve got!” pleaded Rhiannon.
“Don’t give me that. You’ve got your husband and kids. You rarely see your precious brother, so I don’t know why you’re getting so concerned.”
Rhiannon couldn’t control her sobs any longer. She burst into tears. Paul couldn’t stand anyone crying. She’d have plenty to cry about when her brother was dead. No that was too easy. When Ianto Jones was in a coma, just like Karen.
Paul looked out of the window just as the SUV pulled onto the street. Smiling he said “Not long now, then we’ll be out of your hair and you can get on with your life.”
Checking no-one was on the street, Paul went to meet Ianto.
As Ianto pulled into his sisters street he had a feeling something wasn’t quite right. Where was the ambulance? Why was there no-one around? Surely Rhi would have called them and they’d be here by now? Who was that coming out of his sisters house?
The stranger made his way over to the vehicle just as Ianto was getting out. He then saw Rhi stood at the front door....she wasn’t hurt! What was going on? Before he had a chance to ring Jack or retrieve his weapon, the stranger was at his side pointing a gun at his head.
“Good morning Mr Jones, so nice of you to come to your sisters’ aid. But as you can see she’s perfectly fine, not hurt at all.”
“Who are you? What do you want?”
“Oh, all in good time. Now say goodbye to your sister and get back in the vehicle, we’re going for a drive.”
Ianto looked over at his sister, she shrugged and shook her head. She didn’t know what was happening either.
Ianto did as he was told, nodded to Rhi that he would be ok, and got back behind the wheel. Paul went round to the passenger seat.
“Where’re we going?”
“Oh, just for a little drive, like I said. I’ll tell you as we go.... Now DRIVE!”
Ianto didn’t want to anger this man any more than he already was, so he had to choose his words carefully.
“You seem to know who I am, but who are you?”
“All you need to know for now is that I am your worst enemy. Forget all those aliens you so happily destroy. I’m worse than anything you’ve encountered since those Daleks and Cybermen at Canary Wharf.”
Ianto’s mind was turning over. This guy must have worked at Torchwood 1. How else would he know about Canary Wharf? He would, for now, do everything this mad man wanted. At least Rhi wasn’t hurt. He somehow had to contact Jack. He needed Jack, he would sort all this out. He loved Jack, and this mad man wasn’t going to destroy that.
“Ok Mr Jones, pull off the road just here.”
They were not far from Rhi’s estate on an old industrial complex. This area was, Ianto knew, set for demolition in the next few days. Contractors were going to build a brand new housing estate. Why would this man bring him here? Ianto did as he was told.
“Ok we’re going to stay here. You’re going to ring the great Jack Harkness and get him here. As soon as he arrives the fun will begin.”
